The Greco-Roman Myths
Over fifty years ago the psychologist Carl Jung announced that although God and the Gods had been declared dead, they were very much alive in the form of the symptoms and crises that sent many people to his consulting room. More recently Mythologist David Miller put it this way: "The gods are alive and well, not to mention doing a lot of damage."
What myth or myths own you? By taking a look at some of the more powerful stories from the Greco-Roman pantheon we can begin to understand the way these forces have gone underground---liberating themselves from their outward projections in the sky into our bodies where they cause no end of physical and emotional hardship.
During this four week cycle (meetings are once a week for two hours) we will begin by addressing ourselves to answering the question of "what is a myth?" as well as learn a little bit about the social and historical environment from which these myths evolved. We will also learn why it is important to sit in the underworld and why we must rebel against our fathers and why the stories of Hephaestus and Chiron may be alerting us to the myth of our time. Finally, we will become familiar with a cast of characters that though strange on first sight, will seem very familiar once we translate them into their everyday manifestations.
One of our primary goals in this course, as with all Sophia Seminars, is to understand the power of metaphor in all of its manifestations. By living metaphorically we begin to apprehend the world in a way often discounted by our rational, left brain sides which though important, do not allow us to see all dimensions of experience.
Classes will take place once a week either on Tuesdays from 10:00 until 12:00 in the mornings or 7:30 until 9:30 in the evenings. The first day of this Seminar is Tuesday, January 12. For more information, please contact info@sophiacycles.com
